Is it Because? by Tony Ross is about bullying. Ross has turned the subject on its head and made the bully the loser and the victim, a nice looking chap. Now of course, that is the way bullying is perceived by the parent of the victim. But usually the bully is thought to be cool, tough, brave and to be feared by others. The victim often assumes that his tormentor is fine and something is wrong with himself.
This is a book where the victim wonders, in simple verse, why this boy won't stop bothering him.
"Is it because he hasn't a dog. It is because he is thick as a log?" The rhymes are cute and the pictures are classic Ross watercolour and pen.
I think that for someone being bullied, it can help them talk about the problem, compare their bully to this one or even help them snap out of their victim mode and start looking for holes in the bully's armour.
My ten year old read this and engaged but it would be just as suitable for a 5 year old.
