Charlotte Voake is one of the most amazing, and yet understated, children's illustrators and authors. Every young child should have one of her books on their shelves. We at the JBW have proclaimed ourselves as her biggest fans.
From Pizza Kittens and Here Comes the Train, which we lovingly reviewed in the Picture Book Quarterly
to her books on cats, composers and twins, she is witty, whimsical and spontaneous. Whether she is writing and illustrating or just writing her drawings are not simply art forms or background, they are an integral part of the book. In Mr Davies and the Baby she hand writes the text in a beautiful hand. She practically covers the book in letters.
Voake is a master at understanding children and anthropomorphizing animals as children. She seems to have the necessary distance from the events she writes about, in order to see the humour, which is largely present in the tale.
As we are in the run up to the dreaded holiday of green and red, make sure you peruse the list that appears when you click on the blue words, Charlotte Voake, above. Any 2-6 year old would be grateful. Feel free to email us to ask advice from the world's biggest Charlotte Voake fans!
