I just got through listening Paul Temple and the Spencer Affair starring Peter Coke as Paul Temple and Marjorie Westbury as Steve, his wife. I had the nicest morning as a result. The children and I started listening on Monday, when we had a series of errands to do before the start of school. Yesterday, when they were safely back to work, I pulled out my paints and couldn't wait to listen to the end of the story.
Francis Durbridge's classic series that ran from the Forties nearly through the 1960's, is old-fashioned radio at its best.
Paul is a detective cum writer. He, with the help of his glamorous wife and the police, solve quite complicated crimes involving thefts and murders, the usual sorts. What is so lovely about these stories is that children from about eight and up seem as gripped as grown-ups. The sound effects sound staged, the theme tune is endlessly played between episodes but all this somehow adds to the enchantment. As an American living in London, I love the accents of another era. It is hard to find the range of posh accents that once were.
I don't know anyone who has listened to a Paul Temple mystery, that hasn't heard at least five. They are captivating and often unpredictable.
