The independent bookstore is a dying breed. Not that Waterstone's isn't a great bookshop or the occasional Barnes and Noble visit in the summer isn't fun. But there isn't something cozy about browsing in a Daunt Books, knowing that if you have a question, the staff don't only want to answer it but engage you in conversation further.
Next week (24th-30th May 2008) in Herne Hill SE24 and Primrose Hill NW1 in London, there is a mini-literary festival called Moon Lane Children's Literature Festival. All events are free but you need to book because places are limited. If you are a fan of the Astrosaurs series by Steve Cole or like Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson books, then you should check out the schedule and grab yourself a ticket.
Independent bookshops used to be a feature of most neighbourhoods. Notting Hill has still not recovered from the loss of Elgin Books, a much loved store formerly off Portobello Road. We miss it. Please support those that still remain.
