National Public Radio, known as NPR has announced its top ten children's CDs of the year and Gunnar Madsen has made it on the list. It won't let me post a direct link but the site is easy enough to navigate. Sorry for the indirect approach to it.
For those of you who are not familiar with one of the Junior Book Worm's favourite musician of the new millennium then check him
out at www.gunnarmadsen.com (on Gee, Spot records) and enrich your life. But in the meantime, check out the others on the top ten list. Particularly, if you live in the desert of good children's music, the UK, then you will want to risk the import duty and send a few of these beauties over. Trout Fishing in America was in its deserved place at the top of the list but we were a little disappointed not to see They Might Be Giants on the list at all. It could be that they did not qualify because they are largely known as an adult band. Perhaps these were all new albums and they have not come out with a new kids' CD this year. But if you find yourself dreading the music your children require you to listen to in the car, then it is your own fault. Find music that everyone can appreciate, where the musicians respect their instruments and their audience both big and small. There is such a brief period when you are in control of the music. Think show tunes, classical music and good quality children's music. The combination is essential.
