I was over at a friend's house and we got on to the subject of children's books because I had donated the Chris Wormell book because it had a CD attached and thought that they could give it to their little ones to listen to and avoid reading it. But they hadn't read George and the Dragon, so they were fine with the book as they had nothing to compare it to.
It turned out that they were big Chris Wormell fans and dropped a few on my lap. The one book they couldn't find was Two Frogs . They told me the whole story of these two frogs, one with a stick awaiting unlikely things. The other frog laughs at the stick bearing frog. The two have an in depth conversation about the merits of having a stick just in case. Our friend said it was like listening to a couple of rabbis having a talmudic conversation.
In the end, everything that the frog with the stick worried about comes to fruition. Does the stick help or not? I urge you to read this book to find out. The illustrations alone, are worth a flick through. As we said, it is rare to find an excellent illustrator who is also a skilled writer ( of course their are exceptions, Maurice Sendak, for example).
Thank you Adam and Victoria. We read it aloud to the children, something we have not done in a long time.
