Okay, I want you to think of Harry Potter. Got it? Now, move to America (Upstate New York), make it a university not a school and increase the sex, violence and swearing quota. Then kill Ron. Quiddich is replaced by 'Welters'; a combination of chess, capture the flag and magic. That is the first part of The Magicians.
In the second chunk, they all go to pretty much a Narnia that had been poisoned by evil. There is a really sad twist but I won't ruin it. It is truly fantastic because one character, Elliot, has some of the best lines in anything, ever. For example, when asked how he protects his lungs from his smoking habit, he ensues, and I quote, "I sacrifice virgin school girls every other fortnight by the light of the gibbous moon with a silver scalpel, forged by Swiss albinos who are also virgins." I rest my case.
editor: What else can I add? If you are not curious about the book after that review, then nothing I can say could make a difference. em
